Remembering Eva Ibbotson

by Louise November 29th, 2010 | Children's, Fiction
Aged 85, British novelist Eva Ibbotson passed away on October 20 this year. Ibbotson was a very active writer in the final years in her life. In fact, all of her novels were published in the latter half of her life.

I remember reading several Eva Ibbotson children's books when I was in elementary and middle school. Her novels are filled with magical creatures and places, along with a bit of humor, the perfect combination for imaginative young boys and girls. These are my favorite Ibbotson books:

The Secret of Platform 13 - Platform 13 is a portal at King's Cross

Eden Springs: A Novella by Laura Kasischke

by Jane Wangersky November 15th, 2010 | Fiction
The setting of this novella is so bizarre -- a utopian religious colony in 1920s Michigan, where members practice celibacy, run an amusement park, and field a semi-pro baseball team -- that it's a shock to learn it really existed.

Yet the House of David was once very much part of the real world, and its founder, Benjamin Purnell, still has his followers (who seem to have written his Wikipedia article). Purnell promised his faithful they would live till the end of time, then possess eternal youth. At Eden Springs, near Benton Harbor, Michigan, they built luxurious houses and seemed
