When I was younger, I was a huge fan of fantasy books. However, the stories that involved the "typical" princesses who were beautiful and elegant, looking for (or, perhaps more commonly, waiting to be rescued by) their respective princes, did not interest me as much. In fact, I almost took a dislike to princesses in general; that is, until Princess Cimorene came along.
Princess Cimorene is the protagonist of the Enchanted Forest Chronicles, written by Patricia C. Wrede. She is the youngest of seven sisters, all princesses of Linderwall, but rather unlike them in appearance, being tall and raven-haired rather
Of Mice and Men
by Louise December 27th, 2010 | Classics, Fiction
Students often cringe when the word "classic" is used to describe a book. These so-called "classics" are often quite wordy and difficult to understand. Though a classic should be timeless, the diction in many of the classics often betrays the fact that they were not written in a recent decade, or perhaps even century. It can be hard to relate to or understand the matters addressed in the novel. For me, Wuthering Heights was that type of "classic" -- not my cup of tea.

Ratio: The Simple Codes Behind the Craft of Everyday Cooking, by Michael Ruhlman
by Jane Wangersky December 20th, 2010 | Nonfiction
It's not that Michael Ruhlman, author of Ratio, hates recipes -- he likes them and includes many in this book -- but, as he says, "few of them help you to be a better cook in any substantial way. In fact, they may hurt you as a cook by keeping you chained to recipes."
While researching another book at the Culinary Institute of America, Ruhlman came across the concept of ratio -- what proportion of flour to liquid to eggs to fat to other ingredients would turn into bread, custard, pancake batter, or... you name it. Chef Uwe Hestnar, working

A Christmas Memory by Truman Capote
by Jane Wangersky December 15th, 2010 | Fiction
Though Truman Capote is better known for world-weary offerings like Breakfast at Tiffany's and In Cold Blood, his works also include a gently bittersweet short story of the friendship between a small boy and an elderly woman: A Christmas Memory.
The story is set in the 1930s and based on Capote's childhood memories. The boy and his friend are really distant cousins who live in the same household. "Other people inhabit the house, relatives; and though they have power over us, and frequently make us cry, we are not, on the whole, too much aware of them." The woman, the
