The Help: A Second Look

December 15th, 2011 by Kaitlin | Fiction
Back in August, our own T Akery reviewed the book-turned-movie hit of the summer, The Help, by Kathryn Stockett. It was, perhaps, a little more timely a few months ago, so she beat me to the punch with the initial review. Still, with the recent DVD/Blu-Ray release, I've been seeing more TV attention, and finally decided to procrastinate Christmas shopping long enough to pick up the copy my mother left in my room when she finished it back in August.

Typically, we at 'Bout Books follow the "once is enough," philosophy. Why give a book two reviews when we

The Terror by Dan Simmons

November 28th, 2011 by Jessica B. | Fiction
I have to admit I was incredibly excited when I heard about this book because it combines two of my favorite things, historical novels and Dan Simmons. And Simmons delivers an amazing historical novel that will keep you on your toes.

The Terror tells the story of the crews of two boats, The HMS Terror and HMS Erebus, and their attempt to reach the North Pole as a part of the 1845 Franklin Expedition. Simmons tells their story as a tale of being trapped in the ice for years, living off of rotten food, dwindling coal supplies and the hope

In Explosive Eighteen, the latest Stephanie Plum novel from Janet Evanovich, the sassy, sexy bounty hunter finds herself in the thick of the action as law enforcement and an assorted grab-bag of ruffians and nutcases are coming after her for an answer to an intriguing question.

The book has Plum flying alone back to New Jersey, ruing the developments that turned her dream holiday into something else altogether. What happens to her seatmate on Flight 127 from Hawaii to Newark just removes another brick from the teetering Jenga tower that is Plum’s life: the man is killed during their LA

The Second Summer of the Sisterhood

November 21st, 2011 by Sam P. | Classics, Fiction, Young Adults
For those of you who read the first book of the series, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, and are optimistic about reading the second I say, read it!  What I loved about the book was how it keeps the same characters.  They're joined by a few extra people, but Ann Brashares still keeps the same four as the main characters.

Bridget has  taken a turn for the worse over the winter  and decides to go to Alabama to find a family member who may be able to answer a few questions about her mother.  Tibby leaves Wallman's and

Stargirl

November 18th, 2011 by Kaitlin | Children's, Fiction, Young Adults
I'm one of those weirdos that like to read books over and over and over again. Some of my favorites are literally falling apart because of so much wear (ahem.... Harry Potter). Other repeats are books that I've forgotten about over the years and rediscover. After so long, it's sometimes like reading a new story -- you remember bits and pieces, enough to pull at that deep part of your brain, but can still be surprised by the twists and turns. My mother is a fifth grade teacher, and going through her library, I've rediscovered countless stories. One of
