This is Mitch Albom’s first nonfiction book to be published since his first nonfiction book, Tuesdays with Morrie, was published twelve years ago. In this book, Mitch Albom presents the amazing written story of an eight year journey between two worlds – two men, two faiths, two communities. It is based on a true story and has the capability to empower your life.
Have A Little Faith all started with an unusual request. What was this request? Well, an 82-year-old rabbi from Albom’s old hometown asked him to deliver his eulogy. Mitch Albom did not feel as if he was worthy of this opportunity, so he involved himself completely in the rabbi’s life in order to better understand this man. While on his quest to become more knowledgeable, he became close with a Detroit pastor. Now this pastor is not your average pastor; he is a reformed drug dealer and convict who preaches to the homeless and the poor in a decaying church. This pastor’s environment is so run down that they do not even have a roof without a hole over their heads. But yet, the Detroit pastor still is able to inspire the people who are barely surviving.
Mitch observes how these very different men instill faith similarly even though their two worlds are completely different. Through his journey he travels through their separate worlds– Christian and Jewish, African-American and white, impoverished and well-to-do. He watches how the two church figures think so differently. For instance, while the older, suburban rabbi embraces faith as death approaches, the younger, inner-city pastor relies on it to keep both his church and himself alive. Have a Little Faith is a book about a life’s purpose and about losing belief and finding it again.
Mitch Albom tends to write powerful stories. Like The Five People You Meet in Heaven or Tuesdays With Morrie, Mitch once again has proven himself to be an amazing author. Even if you are like me and you aren’t religious, this is a very entrancing story that allows you to think a little more about life.
