Such a Pretty Fat
Jennifer Lancaster is the author of the blog Jennsylvania and the books Bitter is the New Black and Bright Lights Big Ass. Her third book, Such a Pretty Fat came out on Tuesday.
I have to write a disclaimer here: I love Jen Lancaster. I received a review copy of Bitter is the New Black when it was first released and fell in instant adoration of this woman who has managed to write a book in exactly the way my brain thinks.
Once a dot com yuppie, Jen Lancaster was laid off from her job and went from a gazillion dollar salary to a small unemployment stipend. Bitter is the New Black and Bright Lights Big Ass document her journey from prissy narcissist to hilarious woman with narcissist tendencies.
Such a Pretty Fat is her third memoir. The book sets itself up as a weight loss memoir, but it is really more about deciding that maybe, when you are nearing the big 4-0, that it is okay to grow up and take responsibility for your health. Unlike other weight loss memoirs, this one is written from the point of view of a woman who not only loves food but does not have a problem with her weight (though, admittedly, she finds the fact that eating makes her sweat disturbing). She sets out to lose weight for health reasons not cosmetic ones—a rarity in weight loss memoirs.
This book will make you laugh. Out loud. A lot. In fact, you probably shouldn’t read it while you are in public unless you want to explain to the people around you that “this book, it’s just so funny!” While most weight loss memoirs can feel a little “aren’t you proud of me?” this book, instead, feels a lot like “Hey, want to hear a funny story?”
