Systematic Theology

picSystematic Theology by Wayne Grudem is the most comprehensive book on Biblical doctrine that I have ever read, seen, or heard of.  This is no light read.  Systematic Theology is 1167 pages, not counting the voluminous appendices and index.  Grudem spent twenty years researching the Bible and the many areas of contention among modern interpreters.

The thing that separates Grudem’s Systematic Theology from other books on the subject (there are, in fact, several with the same title), is the iron-clad reasoning of the author.  Grudem demonstrates his complete command of the subject matter by laying out fairly both sides of each argument before going on to his conclusion.  Unlike most treatments of an opponent’s argument, Grudem presents the other side as fairly as is humanly possible.  I doubt that most adherents of the opposition could state their position as clearly and reasonably as Grudem does for them.

Systematic Theology is a book written for Christians looking to better understand the underpinnings of their faith and the finer nuances of Biblical meaning.  But I would contend that anyone who is interested in the art of debate would greatly benefit from studying the author’s unmatched skill in dissecting the issues.  Most lawyers would sell their mothers for the ability to argue with the skill that Grudem demonstrates throughout this massive volume.

Although the book is long and can be daunting in its enormity, there is a great deal to be learned in each chapter.  The book does build upon itself, but you easily could go months between chapters and pick up where you left off, marveling at the incredible construction of each argument and the systematic (no coincidence in the choice of words here) methodology with which Grudem builds upon each principle until you find yourself unable to find any flaw with his ultimate conclusions.

For Christians, this is a great book to work through with a group of fellow disciples.  For those curious about Christianity, this is a rock solid detailed exploration of the faith and the proper interpretation of the Bible.  Even if you don’t fall into either category, Systematic Theology is a marvel of logic and persuasive arguing.
